For all of us, pain is a deeply personal experience. An experience no one else can truly describe and capture. Pain can often seem abstract, hard to read, hard to control, and hard to pin down to a clear definition.
Impossible to avoid. Pain is an inevitable a part of life for many.
Many of us have or have had a "bad" relationship with our pain. We may tend to curse our pain, fight with it, avoid it at all costs, or just simply ignore it. This unhealthy relationship only breeds more pain.
It's important for us to start listening to our pain. Understand the message the pain is trying to communicate. Understand its needs. Understand its boundaries.
We can't do this unless we start asking questions of our pain.
If you are someone who has been battling persistent pain for quite some time you may have already started conversing with your pain. It's important to give your pain a voice.
The process of personifying your pain can transform your relationship towards it.
Get to know your pain creature. Give them a name. Get to understand their thoughts, feelings, and urges. It may help to even draw your pain creature.
The process of humanising our pain can bring about much discomfort and resistance. This is completely normal and critical to the process. Our ability to let go of the resistance and begin to relate to our pain in a more meaningful way can be the catalyst for healing.
A few questions to start to help you get to know your pain better are:
Are you ok?
How are you feeling?
How can I support you?
What am I doing that is hurting you?
Can you please let me know when you need a break?
It may seem silly to ask these questions to an imaginary pain creature but believe me. It can open doors to a new relationship, a new way of communicating with your body. One that fosters healing rather than more pain.
Warmest,
Ray
